Shijia Hutong Museum is the first ever museum opened in a hutong. Among the hundreds of hutongs in Beijing, Shijia Hutong stands out because it has played host to many famous people in China. It has also witnessed many significant events and historic changes in China's modern history. It's even said that "Shijia Hutong alone documents half of the history of China."
史家胡同博物馆是(首都)第一家开在胡同里的博物馆。在北京数百条胡同中，史家胡同独具特色，因为中国很多名人都曾住在这里。这条胡同也见证了中国现代历史中很多重大事件和巨变。甚至有这样的说法，“一条胡同，半部中国”。
Despite its rich history, Shijia Hutong cannot escape from the influence of modernization. People's lives have improved a lot, especially since the reform and opening-up in the late 1970s.
尽管有着丰富的历史，史家胡同仍然难以避开现代化的影响。近年来那里的人们生活大幅改善，特别是在1970年代晚期改革开放以来。
You might think that old traditions and modern lifestyle are like square pegs in round holes. But here in Shijia Hutong, you will find the perfect proof that they can actually bring out the best in each other.
你可能觉得古老的传统和现代的生活方式之间会格格不入。但是恰恰就在史家胡同，你会发现两者之间相得益彰的完美证明。
Some say a museum is like a jigsaw puzzle, with all of its pieces stored inside to provide a whole picture for a certain period of time. That certainly is the case for the Shijia Hutong Museum. But to be honest, I think the entire Shijia Hutong is one huge living museum, documenting all of its ever-changing buildings, residents, sounds and cultures – across space and time.
